A short history of hemp genetics

From landrace to lineage

Context for everything else on this site — where hemp's genetic diversity came from, and why so much of it has already been lost.

~2800 BCE and earlier

Landrace origins

Hemp was domesticated in Central Asia and spread along early trade routes into China, India, and eventually Africa and Europe. Regional growing conditions over thousands of years produced distinct landraces — genetically stable populations adapted to their specific climate and use, whether fiber, seed oil, or grain.

1600s–1800s

Colonial and early American hemp

Hemp was a staple fiber crop in colonial America, grown widely for rope, canvas, and textiles. Seed stock moved with settlers and traders, mixing landraces and creating regional strains whose exact genetic makeup was rarely recorded.

1937–1970

Prohibition-era collapse

The Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, and federal scheduling that followed, effectively ended commercial hemp cultivation in the U.S. Seed banks, breeding programs, and generations of institutional growing knowledge went dormant or disappeared entirely. This is the biggest single gap in the historical record we're working to document.

2014 & 2018

Farm Bill legalization

The 2014 Farm Bill authorized pilot hemp research programs, and the 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized hemp cultivation (defined as cannabis with 0.3% or less delta-9 THC by dry weight). Breeders and farms began rebuilding seed stock — some from surviving landrace lines, some from crosses developed during prohibition.

2018–present

The modern preservation movement

A patchwork of small breeders, archivists, and collector-focused seed banks are now the primary keepers of hemp genetic diversity — mostly working independently, with no shared registry. That's the gap 143 Genetics is built to fill.

The Purple Chef

An in-house purple line developed by Chef Budz Genetix and reversed onto 26 catalog releases. Functions as one of two founding hubs the rest of the catalog crosses back into.

Backbone line

Golden Haze

A landrace-descended cross — Acapulco Gold × Colombian Gold, dating to the 1970s — used as breeding stock for 11 gold-toned, citrus-leaning releases in the catalog.

How we verify

Sourced, not invented

A lot of "genetics" content online is marketing dressed up as science. Here's our actual methodology.

Breeder-provided records

Lineage claims start with the breeder or farm's own catalog history, cross records, and reversal logs — the same records they use internally.

Disputed attribution, flagged

When parentage is contested or unconfirmed, we say so directly instead of presenting it as settled fact. A disputed line is still useful history — it just needs a label.

No manufactured jargon

We're not going to invent pseudo-scientific terminology to sound more credible. If we can't cite it plainly, we don't publish it as fact.
